Entry Criteria

Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 4 Certificate / Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.

English

As this NFQ level 5 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.

IT Skills and Equipment Required

Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

  • An internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps.
  • The latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, set to accept cookies and pop-ups.
  • Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader, to view content.
  • Word processing software, such as MS Word or Google Docs.
  • Some courses include video, therefore your computer must be capable of playing video and sound.

Throughout this course, you will discover how to;

  1. Explain the basic principles of infection and the application of standard precautions in relation to infection control, to include the significance of an Area of Infection Control
  2. Discuss the importance of infection prevention and control in the healthcare area, in providing a healthy environment for patients, staff and visitors
  3. Summarise the various types of micro organisms, the elements required for the growth, spread and subsequent infection process, to include direct and indirect contact, knowledge of the chain of infection and the need for vigilance and safe practice at all times
  4. Analyse the predisposing factors to the development of healthcare-acquired infections to include contact precautions, respiratory precautions and enteric precautions
  5. Discuss the role and functions of the local infection control team members, to include local policy in relation to dress, staff health and travel associated infections
  6. Investigate the terms cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation to include cleaning standards, procedures and frequencies while paying special attention to decontamination of equipment, including patient care equipment
  7. Identify the main blood borne viruses which pose a threat and the methods that prevent the spread of infections
  8. Examine the role of antibiotics and the importance of correct and safe antibiotic use to avoid antibiotic resistance
  9. Differentiate between social hand hygiene, antiseptic hand hygiene and surgical hand hygiene to include the correct use of alcohol hand gels and the need for good personal skin care and efficient hand washing
  10. Implement the local terminal cleaning procedure in a range of settings, such as an isolation room, single use items and outbreak management
  11. Apply appropriate management of blood and body fluid spillages, to include policies for dealing with clean and soiled linen, the disposal of sharps and the correct management following inoculation, injury or accidental exposure to blood and body fluids.

Assessment
The course 5N3734 Infection Prevention and Control is assessed in the following ways, with the following weighting;

  • Skills Demonstration 40%
  • Examination 40% of marks.

Leaner Record 20%;

A learner record is the learner's self-reported and self-reflective record in which he/she describes specific learning experiences, activities, responses and skills acquired.

Skills Demonstration 40%;

A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

Examination 40%;

An examination provides a means of assessing a learner's ability to recall and apply knowledge, skills and understanding within a set period of time and under clearly specified conditions.A theory-based examination assesses the ability to recall, apply and understand specific theory and knowledge

Our trainers are current with practice in the sector in which they work.
  • Trainers can, by appointment, make time available to you before or after class to answer your queries that cannot be covered in the session. They can also make an appointment with you to discuss your work on a telephone call.

  • Every Saturday, our Digital Ambassador Team holds a Zoom meeting – to assist learners with their technology related challenges - no question too small! The staff in this “Digital Ambassador“ role are experienced in accessing all of our systems, including the LMS and myforustraining.ie. They are positioned to assist with all the usual technology queries learners might have: Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc), email, file saving and organisation etc.

Compassionate Consideration

  • Where a Learner, pursuing an award, through no fault of his/her own, is unable to complete their assessment, the exit pathway below is in place to facilitate this Learner with an alternative course. The Learner is given the opportunity to obtain the Award by completing the course at an alternative date/location should they have relocated to an area where we provide the same award.
  • The following are examples of circumstances where a Learner is unable to complete their project/their course:

You will be awarded a Level 5 QQI Certificate 5N3734 Infection Prevention and Control QQI is the awarding body. Forus Training is a provider of education and training programmes and we issue certificates to learners who have reached the standard for a QQI award. The certificate you will receive on successful completion is a formal confirmation by QQI that you have demonstrated the knowledge, skill and competence required to achieve the named award. This Progmme is validated by QQI and is coded 5N3734 Infection Prevention and Control. This certificate which will be issued to you by us is an award listed on the NFQ (National Framework of Qualifications). This ensures the certificate is nationally and internationally recognised and has many potential uses; for example, for further / higher education or employment in Ireland or abroad.
