Single modules are the best way to build your path to becoming fully certified and
get recognised by NFQ education point scheme.

The programme suits anyone starting out in painting and decorating, working in property maintenance or community employment, or looking to develop practical skills for work or around the home. No prior experience is needed.

Getting started safely: health, safety, and hygiene
Before any brush touches a wall, you'll cover safe working in painting and decorating: selecting and using the right personal protective equipment, safe use and storage of paints, solvents, thinners, and other chemicals, safe use of ladders and trestles, and responsible waste disposal and sustainable product choices.

Tools and materials
Identifying and selecting the tools, equipment, and materials needed for a range of painting and decorating tasks, and understanding what each is for.

Knowing your products
The appropriate uses of thinners, primers, fillers, undercoat, varnish, and wallpaper paste — what each does, when to use it, and why.

Preparing the surface
The foundation of a professional finish: removing old paint or wallpaper, cleaning and filling, sanding, priming, and staining, and preparing an area ready for painting or varnishing.

Painting and varnishing
Applying paint and varnish to a prepared surface using correct brush and roller techniques — cutting-in, working in the right sequence (ceiling, walls, then woodwork), building up primer, undercoat, and topcoat, and avoiding common defects.

Wallpapering
Choosing wallpaper and adhesives, measuring, cutting, and pasting, hanging paper and fixing borders using the correct techniques, and finishing neatly.

Putting it all together
An integrated practical task that brings preparation, painting, and papering together, applied to a real surface and assessed through a practical skills demonstration.

By the end of the programme you will be able to select the right materials and tools, follow the correct sequence for a task, prepare surfaces, paint and varnish, hang paper and fix borders, and apply the health, safety, and hygiene procedures the trade requires.

Assessment

The course 3N0562 Painting and Decorating is assessed in the following ways, with the following weighting;

  • Skills Demonstration 100%

A written portion — scenario-based questions that ask the learner to explain the approach they would take to given painting and decorating situations (for example, which products to use and in what sequence, and the health-and-safety considerations).

A practical demonstration, captured on video — evidence of the learner actually carrying out the physical skills: selecting tools and materials, preparing a surface (removing old paint or paper, cleaning, filling, sanding, priming), painting or varnishing a prepared area, hanging paper and fixing borders, and applying the correct health, safety, and hygiene procedures throughout.
